Neurotransmitter balancing is a non-conventional treatment modality that benefits a number of disorders, including but not limited to neurological and psychological complaints.

In this treatment protocol, neurotransmitter and sulfur-containing amino acid levels in the body, particularly serotonin, dopamine, and cysteine, are adjusted, through the use of targeted nutrition guided by lab testing.

Note that while sulfur-containing amino acids play a critical role in neurotransmitter metabolism, they also have other important roles, so in some cases benefits attributed to balancing neurotransmitters may actually be due to optimizing the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids.

A number of different groups have described protocols for neurotransmitter balancing, including Dr. David Arniston and Neuro-Research [Hinz2015].

Note that nutritional supplements and testing are not covered by most insurance policies, but may be eligible for payment out of Health Care Savings Accounts.
