Overview of Intestinal Hyperpermeability

Leaky Gut Syndrome occurs when damage to the intestinal mucosa compromises the barrier function of the intestinal wall, allowing partially digested food to enter the general blood circulation.

Etiology of Intestinal Hyperpermeability

  • Candida overgrowth in the gut. See the article on dysbiosis for further discussion.

Sequelae of Intestinal Hyperpermeability

  • Food allergies may be associated with leaky gut. Often treating leaky gut syndrome and the underlying yeast dysbiosis will eliminate the food allergies [Shaw2008].
  • A variety of autoimmune diseases are associated with leaky gut.
