Overview of Functional Immune Deficiency

Functional immune deficiency is a condition in which the immune system seems to mount an inadequate defense, resulting in frequent illnesses, but in which conventional medicine has not recognized an underlying cause. This excludes acquired immune deficiencies such as AIDS or immune-suppressive chemotherapy, as well as certain genetic disorders.

Some researchers have suggested that functional immune deficiency is associated with hypothyroidism in the majority of children who suffer frequent infections [Barnes], [Starr2005, pg 53]. Other causes of chronic childhood infections include overuse of antibiotics, and food allergies that prevent proper drainage of the ear.

Dr. Weyrich recommends functional assessment of thyroid status in any patient suffering from functional immune deficiency.
