Etiology

Hypercoagulability and excessive clot formation can have many causes, including:
  • Venous stasis, particularly among bed-ridden patients and airline travelers [Starr2005, pg 151].
  • Oral birth control agents (which may disrupt thyroid binding globulin in the blood) [Starr2005, pg 151].
  • Inflammatory injury to the endothelial lining of arteries [Ross1999], [Starr2005, pg 151].
